SPECIAL STEELS

The Special Steels business unit operates one of the largest warehouses for tool steel in Europe at the locations of Weiershagen, Dieringhausen and Herford. Thanks to our modern band and block saws, as well as our state-of-the-art milling centre, we can offer our customers bars sawn to length or pre-machined plates and blocks within a very short time. Through our subsidiaries in the USA and Asia, as well as our sales partners, we ensure the material supply worldwide.

Food Manufacturing - Our FM brand steels for food processing

The European Union regulations (EC) No. 1935/2004 and (EC) No. 2023/2006 define guidelines for handling materials and objects that come into contact with food. Based on this, the European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines Health Care has published practical guidelines for handling metals and alloys that come into contact with food. According to this, metals must not release any components into food that endanger human health, cause an unacceptable change in the food or impair the organoleptic properties of food. For guidance, specific release limit values (SRL) are defined that describe the maximum levels of ions that may migrate from the metal object to the food.

To support our customers who supply the food and packaging industries, we have developed martensitic stainless steels suitable for food processing. The suitability of these FM brand steels was examined and confirmed by an external accredited laboratory. After hardening, the 1.2083FM achieves good edge retention and good corrosion resistance and can be polished very well. 1.2085FM is a pre-hardened, corrosion-resistant steel that is easy to machine. After hardening, the 1.4112FM not only achieves a high hardness, but also good wear and corrosion resistance.

For more information, you can download our technical brochure and the letters of confirmation from the accredited laboratory. You are also welcome to write to us or contact us by phone.

ADDITIONAL PRODUCTS AND SERVICES

TOOL STEELS FOR HOT STAMPING

During hot stamping of high-strength sheet metals, the forming tools are exposed to high wear, particularly on the drawing radii. Common hot working steels such as 1.2367 or 1.2344 (H13) are often not sufficient in terms of wear resistance. Therefore, many operators use our special tool steels WP7V and CP2M®WP7V is characterized by an excellent ratio of hardness and toughness and has a high wear resistance even at elevated temperatures. CP2M® is a newly developed special material, which achieves excellent wear resistance due to its high hardness and high thermal conductivity.

If you require further information on our special materials WP7V and CP2M®, our contact persons from sales and technology will be happy to assist you

CPPU PLUS (1.2379 PLUS / D2 PLUS) - THE POWDER METALLURGICAL STANDARD

TOOL STEELS FOR MOULD MAKING

Modern lightweight construction concepts require the production of components from plastics and light metals. The focus here is on manufacturing processes such as injection molding of plastics and high-pressure die casting of light metals. In both cases, a melt is pressed into a steel mold under high pressure. In injection molding, additives and fillers added to the plastic have an abrasive and corrosive effect which promote mold wear. In the case of die casting, the mold is exposed to high thermal stresses, which means that heat checking cracks can cause premature failure. Therefore, high demands are placed on injection and die casting molds, and of course on the mold steel.

The Special Steels division stocks a wide range of standardized mold steels such as 1.2311 (P20), 1.2312 (P20+S), 1.2085 and 1.2316. We also stock remelted grades such as 1.2343 ESU and 1.2083 ESR for high polishability requirements. For the highest demands, we supply our special grade 1.2343 ESR PREMIUM. You can find more information on the special grade 1.2343 ESR PREMIUM in our brochure.

THE FLEXIBLE NICHE SUPPLIER OF FORGING AND ROLLING GRADE INGOTS

In Ruenderoth, Dörrenberg Edelstahl GmbH produces forging and rolling ingots with ingot weights from 1 to 14 tons. The heart of this production is an electric arc furnace for melting scrap as well as a ladle furnace and a vacuum degassing unit for secondary metallurgic treatment of steel.

With this plant configuration, we are able to produce a large range of materials, each with their special, individual requirements. Our focus is on smelting tool steels, such as cold-working steel 1.2379, hot-working steels 1.2343 or 1.2344, or high-speed steels containing tungsten, molybdenum, and vanadium, such as 1.3343. Another main area of our production is corrosion-resistant steels with higher carbon contents, such as 1.4112, classic austenitic steels with carbon contents of less than 0.06%, such as 1.4301. Low-alloy engineering steels are another mainstay of our work, completing our product range.

This list of our possibilities is by far not exhaustive and we will carefully assess any demands you may have using our special analysis procedure.

For casting of molten steel, a broad range of polygonal, square and round ingot moulds is available. Please see the ingot mould list for details. We are happy to extend our list in case you may have new requirements. The ingots can be supplied in hot, cold or annealed conditions. For this purpose, we have a special truck with hot-transport cover available. With the help of this equipment we are able to transport the hot forged or rolled ingots directly to our customers for further processing. Several bogie hearth furnaces allow for precisely defined heat treatment specially tailored to the material or for keeping the material warm until the specified date of delivery.

We regard ourselves as your competent partner for niche products in the field of forging and rolling ingots. This holds true for both low quantities and for flexible delivery times at short notice, or tests and special analyses.
