Sustainable business is one of the Doerrenberg basic principles. Ecological compatibility, social justice and economic performance are closely linked to our strategy and the goals derived from it. Non-financial reporting is another opportunity to secure our future. We, as part of the supply chain, accept the responsibility to make our contribution to achieving climate goals and increasing company value.

In addition to efficient steel production the raw materials, the energy supply and the supply chains also need to be considered. Our smelting operations only use return scrap from external suppliers or from our operations. The use of these climate-neutral raw materials is the most environmentally friendly way of producing steel. The electrical energy required for this is 100% green electricity and therefore climate neutral because it comes from renewable sources. These are the basis for the low CO2 balance at our most energy-intensive production site in Ründeroth.

We work with selected and qualified suppliers, who must pass an inspection in accordance with the Supply Chain Due Diligence Act (LkSG), not only when it comes to raw material procurement. The entire supply chain for production and trade is viewed from a sustainable perspective. This is reflected in long-term business relationships. Our management systems according to ISO 14001 (environment) and ISO 50001 (energy) underpin this philosophy, offer reproducibility and allow us to grow with the demands placed on us and the environment.

WE DO GREEN STEEL.

GREEN STEEL FROM DOERRENBERG

Environmental protection, resource-saving work and reduced energy consumption have shaped the way we work for decades. The use of return scrap, including from our own operations, represents an established closed-loop system. For our production sites, we obtain 100% climate-neutral electricity from renewable sources. We melt our steels at our central location in Ründeroth using the low-CO2 electric steel route. These framework conditions enable us to complete these production processes with a favorable CO2 balance.

To represent greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), the CO2 footprint is chosen as the most important assessment tool. The sustainability report presents an overall view and evaluates the different production processes in detail. The final detailing as the last expansion stage takes place with the consideration of the individual products using Scope 1 to 3.

Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism

The basic idea is to impose the same CO2 price on steel products produced abroad as goods produced in the EU. Because of compensatory justice, the aim is to prevent domestic production, which will have to bear the rising CO2 costs in the future, from being relocated to countries without comparable CO2 pricing. The basis for this is the EU emission certificates (EU-ETS). We support climate protection. We are in the project to implement the legal obligation by the end of 2025. The goal is to be able to act as an importer with approval as an “Authorized Customs Declarant for CBAM Certificates” by then.

Energie

Living and working are both related to energy consumption. Germany as a production location has always been known for the most energy-efficient and environmentally friendly energy consumption. To ensure that it stays that way, we have introduced the energy management system DIN EN ISO 50001. You can find out more under the management systems section on our website. For our most energy-intensive production site in Ründeroth, we buy 100% green electricity to have a fair share in shaping the future of an emission-free industry.

QUALITY MANAGEMENT

For quality assurance of structures, processes and results, Doerrenberg obtained the first certification of the quality management system according to DIN EN ISO 9001 by TÜV Rheinland in 1995. The Pressure Equipment Directive 2014/68/EU and certification for welding activities in accordance with DIN EN ISO 384 are also part of our industry-related standards.

ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT

An EMS was established at Doerrenberg for the first time under EMAS-VO in 1997. In 2000, this was replaced by the introduction of environmental management according to DIN EN ISO 14001 and certified by TÜV Nord. This is the basis for planning, implementing, controlling and improving operational environmental performance and target achievement.

TISAX^®

TISAX (Trusted Information Security Assessment Exchange) is a standard developed by the automotive industry that was specifically tailored to the requirements of this industy based on the international standard ISO/IEC 27001. It is operated by the ENX Association on behalf of the Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA). Certification via TÜV Süd ensures that Doerrenberg meets high standards in information security and always keeps regulatory and legal requirements, for example in the areas of data protection and information security, up to date.
